Two posts in one day!!
Get it while it lasts people!

While checking some of your blogs this morning, I noticed that today was Blog Action Day.
And after checking out the website, I realized, "Hey! This is cool. I should be involved in this".
Then I thought, what the hell am I going to write about concerning the environment.

So brainstorm for a second with me here people.
What green things do I do?

- Use reusable bags for everything.
- I don't own a car. So I take public transportation or walk everywhere.
- I live like a mushroom... just like Janet.
- I try to eat locally grown foods and veggies.


But one thing that I do not pay enough attention to is recycling.
Like many buildings in Boston, we have huge dumpsters in the back of our building for our trash, but no recycling. Coming from NYC and then living at a university with a very strong recycling program, I just figured that Boston was not a green city and continued to throw my bottles/cans/paper into the trash with everything else and I have continued to do so for almost four years.

So this morning, I decided that I would become a better informed resident of the city of Boston and get down to the bottom of this issue. Here is what I found on the cityofboston.gov site.



Large Building Recycling

The City of Boston's Public Works Department provides free weekly recycling services to residents in large apartment buildings and condominiums. Apartment buildings and condominiums with more than six units are considered "large".

Large Apartment Buildings are required to provide Recycling services per City Coucil Ordinance entitled:"Regarding Access to City Recycling Programs for Large Apartment Buildings" which went into effect January 2003

How You Can Participate:
To obtain recycling services:

• Residents need to have their landlords, property managers or condo trustees call the recycling office at 635-4959 and speak to John McCarthy, the Large Apartment Building Recycling Coordinator.
• The recycling coordinator will visit the apartment building to explain the program and suggest operation options.
• The building manager must then purchase the recycling receptacles known as carts. One receptacle is used for mixed paper (newspapers, magazines, etc.), and another for bottles, cans, and plastic containers (milk jugs, yogurt containers, etc.).
• Carts range in size from 32 to 68-gallons and cost less than $75.
• Carts should be purchased after recycling coordinator's site visit.
• The building manager then distributes written notification to the tenants about their new recycling program.

Building managers will be provided with recycling guides along with recycling stickers for the carts. Recycling guides are available in five languages The City of Boston's Recycling Program offers free recycling services to all Boston residents.

Residents who live in apartment buildings and condominiums with less than seven units can recycle by calling 635-4959 and requesting a blue box.

Commercial Businesses interested in recycling should call WasteCap at (781) 679-2176.

I'm about to call my management company right now and see what can be done.
